Bantam Bearcats advance to CCYFL Superbowl

Team is raising funds for upcoming Las Vegas football tournament

After shutting out the Lompoc Packers, 33-0, in their second playoff game of the season on Saturday, Nov. 9, the Paso Robles Bantam Bearcats claimed the first place title in the Bantams division of the Central Coast Youth Football League. The undefeated Bearcats (10-0) will face off against the Orcutt Wolfpack in the Bantams Superbowl game on Saturday, Nov. 23 at War Memorial Stadium.

The Paso Robles Bantam Bearcats took first place in the Bantams division of the Central Coast Youth Football League and will play in the Bantams Superbowl game as well as a tournament in Las Vegas.

“We have a great group of kids and they all work very hard,” said Matt Monteiro, head coach for the Bantam Bearcats. “As coaches, we have challenged [the players] since day one and set the bar high – they have exceeded our expectations.”

According to Monteiro, the Bearcats have been running multiple formations and very complex offensive and defensive schemes. Combine this with the talents of each player and the Bearcats have proven to be a team that knows how to win games – and win with at least a 30-point margin!

“As a coach, I’m proud to say every kid on our team can block and tackle and has the understanding of the game,” said Monteiro. “We have outscored our opponents 380-13 over 10 games.”

Defensive coach Cody Gang said that part of the team’s success comes from holding the players to high expectations.

“We have 7-10 year-olds running equivalent to a high school level offense and defense,” said Gang. “It’s a higher learning curve, but comes with higher reward.”

Brandon Thomas, Andrew MacDonald, Ryan McCluskey and Chris Monteiro add to the Bantam Bearcats’ coaching staff.

In addition to earning the league title and advancing to the Superbowl in their division, the Bantam Bearcats have been invited to participate in a tournament in Las Vegas the weekend of Dec. 6 – 8. The team is now turning to the community in hopes of raising funds to cover travel and tournament costs.

“This will be a wonderful experience for our team,” says team parent Jennifer Miller. “We are looking for local businesses and individuals to help donate to our fundraisers so that our whole team will be able to attend. Taking our Bearcats to Las Vegas is going to be expensive; times are tough for a lot of families so we are trying to raise as much money as we can to pay for expenses.”
