Bauer Speck Elementary seeking ‘reading buddies’

Program helps kids develop literacy and a love for readingbauer speck elementary reading program

Paso Robles Joint Unified School District and Bauer Speck Elementary are looking for volunteers for a new mentorship program called “Books with Buddies.” This program is being implemented to encourage students in the second and third grades to develop a love for reading and literacy.

The program will provide one-on-one reading with a volunteer from the community. That volunteer will partner with the same second or third grade student for 30 minutes once a week for 10 weeks during the student’s lunch hour. The goal is to develop a strong bond between the mentor and the student through one-on-one attention.

The first 10- week session of this program begins Dec. 2 and ends Feb. 17. The school is still accepting volunteers for this session. It will be held during the 11:40 a.m. -12:20 p.m. lunch period on Wednesdays and Thursdays.

If you are a community leader, local business owner, community member, interested in becoming a mentor, or would like more information, please email or call Karen Grandoli or Rita Koski at (805) 769- 1350.
