Bearcat athletes excel at recent events 

 

–Paso Robles High School has released recent sports scores from Bearcat team athletic tournaments and meets. In a press release on Tuesday, Anthony Morales, Director of Athletics at Paso Robles High School said there was “Some very exciting news to share about our PRHS athletics.”

Cross Country

Paso Robles split the cross country teams, sending the Varsity squads to the Golden Eagle Cross Country Invite in Clovis and the JV and Frosh/Soph teams to the Atascadero Invitation at Santa Margarita Lake.

The boy’s team took first place out of 27 teams at Clovis. Competing teams included Madera South (2016 CIF Central Section D1 Champions), Ridgeview (2016 CIF Central Section D3 runner up), and local league rivals Arroyo Grande (currently ranked seventh in Southern Section D2) and Ventura (Currently ranked ninth in D2). Pablo Cortes and Ian Young led the boy’s team efforts, finishing in eighth and 11th places.

The girls team finished fifth out of 22 teams, ahead of Arroyo Grande. They were led by freshmen Maddi Loff and Grace Chamberlain who finish 23rd and 29th respectively. This meet was meant to pit Bearcat athletes against the Central Section school teams who the Bearcats will be seeing more often as the teams move to the Central Section next year.

The rest of the Beatcat team conducted themselves very well at Santa Margarita Lake. In the Frosh/Soph Boys race, the Bearcats took first place by a 1-2 finish of Alejandro Ruiz and Devin Dobroth. While the boys were running their post-race cool down, the JV girls turned up the heat and won the girl’s team title. The teams were led by Maria Santiago and Emily Mathein. Five girls finished in the top 15. The boys put five in the top 13 (7 in the top 17). This was the first JV girls title won by the Bearcats at this meet.

Women’s Volleyball

The women’s volleyball team participated in a two day tournament at Clovis North High School. The team played very hard and tough and defeated Mission College Prep 2-0.

Student Football

The freshman team traveled to Clovis North HS and fought hard. The JV football team had a tough loss in a very close game. The varsity team defeated Clovis North 27-7. Cade England broke the PRHS school record with a 54-yard field goal in the game.

Golf

On Sept 21, the women’s golf team placed fifth in the San Luis mini tournament with a score of 281 and the following individual scores:

  • Hallie Smith shot a 50
  • Kayla Hernandez shot a 53
  • Kayla Williams shot a 54
  • Josie Scruggs shot a 56
  • Tori Stewart shot a 69

Tennis

In Women’s Tennis PRHS defeated Righetti 12-6 in extreme windy conditions. Paso is now 7-6 overall and 3-3 in league.

  • Siena Berry-: 4-6, 6-0, 6-1
  • Stephany Abarca: 6-1, 3-6, 6-3
Scores for doubles
  • Becca Slason and Joanna Diaz: 2-6, 6-3, 6-0
  • Livia Rambo and Alex Fletes: 6-3, 6-0, 1-6
  • Mia Venturini and Pina Contreras: 6-2, 6-1

Women’s volleyball

The PRHS team lost to Atascadero High School 3-0. The scores were 16-25, 10-25 and 20-25.

On Sept 19, women’s golf defeated Pioneer Valley 276-313. Hallie Smith shot a 49. Men’s water polo played Pioneer Valley in a PAC 8 league game. The Bearcats were able to shut out the PV Panthers 22–0.  Leading the scoring for the day was Carson Weide with four goals. Sebastian Davidson and Tre Eade added three goals. Nick Matteson and Nate Martin added two goals each. Pedro Guerra, AJ Brown, Ethan Moore, Nolan Rumph, John Nash, Cameron Armstrong, Zack Tucker and Zane Warren all added one goal each.
