The Paso Robles City Council recognized yet another high school group at its meeting on Feb. 17. This time it was the Paso Robles High School varsity football team for its win over Newbury Park in the California Interscholastic Federation Football Southern Section Northern Division. The Bearcats won the championship game 13-10.

Paso Robles Mayor Steve Martin said that the council recognized the Bearcat football program for “displaying exceptional talent, dedication, hard work and commitment in your pursuit of excellence while competing in the [CIF championships].”

After their win in the CIF Championship, the Bearcats then went on the state’s Regional Bowl game on Dec. 13, 2014, in Lakeside, just north of San Diego. The Bearcats faced off against El Capitan High School. Paso Robles’ record was 13-1 going into that game and the El Capitan’s 13-0.  The team lost its bid for the championship in a 41-0 shut out.

The team was led by coach Rich Schimke, who was named the CIF Coach of the Year for his team’s win at the CIF championship.

“The city has honored significant accomplishments by PRHS students for many years,” Paso Robles City Manager Jim App said. “We began doing this as a way of staying connected with schools, honoring their contributions to community life and recognizing students who, through their extraordinary academic, artistic and sports accomplishments distinguish themselves and, as a result, bring honor and recognition to their home town. … We have given them medals as symbols and mementoes of the city’s esteem and recognition for bringing honor to Paso Robles through their accomplishments.”
