Bearcats suffer heartbreak 22-21 defeat by rival Greyhounds

Double overtime game keeps fans on their feet

Before a standing room-only crowd at War Memorial Stadium, the Paso Robles High School varsity Bearcats were narrowly defeated by the rival Atascadero Greyhounds, 22-21, in double-overtime on Friday night.

With the defense on either side of the field keeping the points on the scoreboard to a minimum, the first half ended with the Greyhounds leading the Bearcats, 7-3 after a scoreless first inning. In the second inning, Bryce Pasky kicked a 27-yard field goal for Paso High just before Atascadero added a 45-yard touchdown run and PAT.

The Greyhounds scored again in the third quarter to lead the Bearcats, 14-3. Paso added three points on a 26-yard field goal from Pasky with 3:28 remaining in the fourth quarter and continued to gain momentum. With just 43 seconds left in regulation time, the crowd was on its feet as Paso quarterback Gunnar Griffin threw a darting 47-yard touchdown pass to Bailey Gaither followed by a Nathanial Harris two-point conversion run to tie things up 14-14 and send the game into overtime.

After Atascadero failed to score in the first overtime period, Paso was in the position to close the game with a win on a Pasky field goal. Unfortunately, the 25-yard attempt was low and, with no points added to the scoreboard, the two teams proceeded into their second overtime.

Paso took the field first, with Harris scoring a touchdown and Pasky adding the PAT to lead Atascadero, 21-14. But after Hounds quarterback Robbie Berwick completed a 25-yard touchdown pass to Nick Ducasse and then added a two-point conversion, Atascadero claimed the 22-21 victory.

Harris ran for 141 yards on 29 carries and Gaither finished with 120 receiving yards for Paso. Griffin threw for 110 yards including one touchdown pass.
With the win, the undefeated Greyhounds (8-2, 6-0) claimed the PAC 7 League title outright and enter the playoffs as the No. 1 seed. Atascadero will host Saugus in the CIF Southern Section Northern Division Football Playoffs on Friday, Nov. 15 at 7:30 p.m.

As the PAC 7’s No. 2 seed, the Bearcats (7-2, 4-2) will host the Hart Indians (8-2) from Newhall on Friday, Nov. 15 in the CIF Southern Section Northern Division Football Playoffs. Game time is 7:30 p.m. at War Memorial Stadium.
