Bearcats’ early struggles continue in 55-29 loss to Cabrillo High School
– On Friday night, the Paso Robles women’s basketball team struggled in a match-up against Cabrillo High School, falling 55-29 on their home court in Gil Asa Gymnasium.
The Bearcats (8-12, 1-3 Sunset) are off to a tough start in league play, having secured just one win early in the season.
The Conquistadores came out strong, building a 10-0 lead before the Bearcats managed to score their first basket. Slow starts have been an ongoing issue for the Bearcats, putting them at a disadvantage early in the game and forcing them to play catch-up.
“Offensively, we are just not being patient enough with the system,” head coach Mark Martinez said.
The Bearcats struggled to create quality opportunities and capitalize on them throughout the first half, with constant turnovers disrupting their rhythm. They failed to generate offensive momentum as the Conquistadores applied defensive pressure, disrupting their flow to knock down consistent shots.
At halftime, the Bearcats were down 33-18, needing to execute a better game plan to create quality offensive production.
Bearcats rally behind Sill, but fall to Cabrillo
With their heads still in the game going into the second half, the Bearcats cleaned up turnovers, creating quality looks to freshman center, Macoy Sill.
Sill has been a dominant force in the paint this season, consistently establishing herself as a key contributor on both ends of the court. She has been pivotal in keeping the Bearcats alive, from creating second-chance opportunities to aggressively attacking the rim and drawing fouls.
“We just have to keep feeding her the ball,” Martinez said. “And when she has her opportunity, she needs to take advantage of it.”
Sill wrapped up the night in double figures with 11 points, capitalizing on pick-and-roll plays and benefiting from clean feeds to dominate in the paint.
Bearcats work to address concerns ahead of Lompoc game
Coach Martinez stressed the importance of improving defensive communication, noting repeated backdoor passes that left the paint wide open for Cabrillo’s easy layups. Along with struggles defending the low post, the Bearcats also failed to contest perimeter shots, allowing the Conquistadores to capitalize on numerous three-pointers.
The Conquistadores’ guard, Sophia Austin, delivered a standout performance with 25 points, including four three-pointers, fueling the team’s high offensive output.
“Us allowing them to have a high shooting percentage was hurting us,” Martinez said. “That’s what led us to play catch-up.”
Still seeking another win in league play, the Bearcats know their success will start at practice. By addressing inconsistencies in their game plan and putting in the work, they aim to find the rhythm needed to turn things around.
The Bearcats will be back in action on Tuesday, Jan. 28, when they host Lompoc at 6:30 p.m. in Gil Asa Gymnasium.
“They got to hate to lose more than they love to win,” Martinez added.
