Bearcats face Greyhounds Friday night

Bearcats football paso robles
–The Paso Robles Bearcats take on Atascadero High School Greyhounds Friday night in Atascadero in the final game of their regular season. The Greyhounds are 5-4, 2-1 in conference. Atascadero opened the season 1-3 with tough non-conference losses against Ventura, Stockdale (Bakersfield) and St. Francis (Mountain View.) Since those early season defeats, the Greyhounds only lost one game. Arroyo Grande beat them 45-24.

The Bearcats are 7-2 overall, 2-1 in conference. They lost to Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth) and to Arroyo Grande 35-28.

The Bearcats enter the game distracted by the suspension of head coach Rich Schimke. Although he was cleared of wrongdoing by the police and district attorney’s office, the Paso Robles school district administrators are still investigating Schimke’s behavior during a locker room celebration following the victory over San Luis Obispo. A player’s mother became upset after Coach Schimke poured syrup on her son, the winner of the “Pancake Award.” The award goes to a player who best “flattens” opposing lineman.

Schimke’s status with the team is undetermined. The school board is going to have a closed door session next Tuesday to discuss the syrup incident. Shimke is not expected to coach the Bearcats as they take on the Greyhounds in the North County rivalry game Friday night.

The game gets underway at 7 p.m. Friday night in Atascadero.
