Bearcats look towards first round of CIF playoffs
The Paso Robles High School Bearcats football team, 9-1 overall, 3-1 Pac 5 League, will host the Royal High School Highlanders, 4-6 overall, 1-2 Camino League, from Simi Valley in a first round, Northern Division, CIF Southern Section football game on Friday, Nov. 14 at Paso Robles’ War Memorial Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 7 p.m.
The Bearcats are coming off of a 28-18 loss to rival Atascadero in the final game of the season that blemished their quest for a perfect regular season, and knocked them from the top of the Northern Division rankings. The loss to the Greyhounds also resulted in a three-way tie for the PAC 5 Championship.
The resulting tie-breaker placed the Bearcats as the number two team in the PAC 8 Athletic League. The Royal Highlanders finished in a three-way tie for second place with Camarillo and Thousand Oaks high schools in the tough Camino League.
The Bearcats will bring a potent offense averaging 417 yards per game. Leading the way is junior quarterback Justin Davis averaging 188 passing yards per game. Senior Bailey Gaither has been his primary target, hauling in 45 receptions for 1,006 yards over the course of the year.
The Highlanders will counter with an offense that averages 207 yards per game. They will be led by Junior quarterback Matt Sciumbato with 116 completions in 215 attempts for 1,368 yards. The Highlander receiving corps is led by Junior Ryan Pench with 27 receptions, and junior Johnny McGinty with 25 receptions on the year. On the ground senior River Meza has accumulated 1,525 yards on 265 carries for a 5.8 yards average per carry.
If the Bearcats advance to the second round, they will face the winner of the Palmdale/Pioneer Valley game.
