Bearcats suffer first league loss in 40-7 defeat to Arroyo Grande
–The Paso Robles High School Bearcats football team (2-5, 0-1 Mountain) competed in their first league game on the road against Arroyo Grande (5-1, 1-0 Mountain) at Doug Hitchen Stadium on Friday night. In hopes of a strong start to the season, the Bearcats fell short against the Eagles in a defeat of 40-7.
The Bearcat’s defense struggled immensely in the first quarter, unable to deflect any passing attempts, which put the Eagles inside the red zone numerous times throughout the game, setting them up for a five-yard rushing touchdown early in the game, marking the score 6-0. The Eagles took control from their opening possession and never looked back, as the Bearcats struggled to get into rhythm throughout the game.
On their next possession, the Eagles recovered their fumble and pushed up to their 49-yard line. From there, they advanced steadily, with a 10-yard run by their quarterback and another series of first downs, including a three-yard rushing touchdown with 1:19 left in the first quarter. Able to gain ground on both ends, the Eagles had yet another rushing touchdown to end the first quarter and widen the gap 12-0.
The Bearcats attempted to shift gears in the second quarter, with quarterback Marcus Gracia connecting better with his receivers and moving the ball into Eagles’ territory. However, they failed to get inside the red zone, resulting in a punt. Dominating the field on offense, the Eagles capitalized on their ability to get inside the Bearcats territory and completed a 25-yard pass, getting inside the red zone. The completed pass set them up for a three-yard rushing touchdown, further extending their lead 19-0.
By halftime, the Eagles were the only team on the scoreboard, while the Bearcats struggled to find any offensive rhythm. The Bearcats started the third quarter with possession but were unable to convert on fourth down. Just minutes into the quarter, the Eagles responded with a massive 44-yard touchdown pass, pushing the lead to 26-0 after a successful PAT. From there, the Eagles continued to dominate, with a 60-yard punt return touchdown and a Bearcats fumble recovery for another touchdown, pushing the score to 40-0.
The Bearcats could not escape their half, and with 1:40 seconds remaining, officials decided to let the clock run continuously due to the overwhelming score. As the clock winded down in the fourth quarter, the Bearcats found some relief as junior running back Yannis Gelos broke free for a 39-yard rushing touchdown, putting the Bearcats on the board 40-7. While the Bearcats were able to hold the Eagles from scoring in the fourth quarter, it was a little too late to make any difference.
The Bearcats are now 0-1 in the Mountain League as they start their league season and aim to bounce back in their upcoming home game against St. Joseph on Friday, Oct. 11, at War Memorial Stadium.
