Bearcats suffer loss to Arroyo Grande Eagles

Arroyo Grande 42, Paso Robles 0

Bearcats–The Paso Robles Bearcats, in their opening game of PAC 5 League play, were dominated by the Arroyo Grande Eagles Friday night, 42-0. The Bearcats (3-4) were coming off of a 49-0 shutout against Morro Bay last week, with the Eagles feeling strong on the heels of their 28-0 shutout win against Nipomo as they faced the visiting Bearcats.

The Eagles set the tone early with a 93-yard drive that ended with a 4-yard run by Eagles quarterback Sawyer May for their first touchdown of the night.

On the Bearcats’ next possession, they had a fourth down and 2-yards to go at midfield but were unable to advance. The next play by the Eagles resulted in a 49-yard touchdown pass from May to a wide open Matthew Sill for an Arroyo Grande touchdown, putting the Bearcats in a hole, 14-0 with 4:55 left in the first quarter.

Paso Robles fought back on their next drive and had the ball at the Eagles’ 28-yard line, but a fumble recovered by the Eagles stopped the Bearcats. Paso Robles quarterback Justin Davis injured his left shoulder during the drive and would go on to give a gutsy performance throughout the remainder of the game.

The Eagles went on to add three more touchdowns in the second quarter to take a convincing 35-0 lead over the Bearcats going into halftime.

The Bearcats never gave up and had success at times but, with turnovers and penalties costing them throughout the game, they were unable to overcome a strong performance by the Eagles. After losing to the Bearcats twice last year, the Eagles were perhaps motivated to make a statement by their play.

Arroyo Grande added one more touchdown in the third quarter and handed the Bearcats a disappointing 42-0 loss in their league opener.

The Bearcats (3-4) are on the road again Friday, Oct. 16 to take on the San Luis Obispo Tigers (2-5). Varsity takes the field at 7 p.m., with JV play set to start at 4 p.m.
