Bearcats unable to overcome costly mistakes in 26-7 defeat

    – In a game marked by numerous turnovers and defensive stops, the Paso Robles High School Bearcats football team (2-6, 0-2 Mountain) fell to St. Joseph (3-4, 2-0 Mountain) in their second league game at home in War Memorial Stadium on Friday night.

After a game that ended in a blowout last week against Arroyo Grande 40-7, the Bearcats aimed to bounce back and mitigate their mistakes in their previous matchup to go home with the win on homecoming night.

The Bearcats opened with a challenging first possession. Unable to move the ball past their 20-yard line, they were forced to punt. St. Joseph quickly capitalized and blocked the punt, resulting in a safety and an early 2-0 lead for the Knights.

On the Knights’ next possession, they didn’t lose focus and completed a 42-yard pass to get inside the red zone, setting themselves up for a five-yard rushing touchdown and extending their lead 9-0.

After struggling most of the first quarter to gain ground, junior quarterback Marcus Garcia completed a 29-yard pass to sophomore wide receiver Emmett Dobroth, getting into the Knight’s territory for the first time in the game.

As Garcia attempted to push the Bearcats deeper into the Knights’ territory for the chance to get them on the scoreboard, he spotted an opening for his intended receiver, Dobroth. The pass looked clean, but the Knights’ defense stepped up once again, intercepting the throw.

Seizing the momentum, the Knights swiftly turned the turnover into points, launching an 82-yard touchdown pass that widened the lead to 16-0.

By the end of the first quarter, the score read 16-0, and it wasn’t looking too bright for the Bearcats. Their early struggles mirrored those of a previous matchup, where they had also fallen behind quickly and were unable to recover from it.

The Knights were capitalizing well off of constant errors made by the Bearcats, which ultimately set them up in the position to score.

The Bearcats’ struggles and errors continued in the second quarter as Garcia threw another interception deep in Bearcat territory, where the Knights found themselves in the red zone. Without any hesitation, St. Joseph rushed in for a 15-yard touchdown and converted the PAT to extend their lead 23-0 with 9:25 remaining in the half.

Interceptions and turnovers continued to hurt the Bearcats, as the Knights recovered a Bearcats fumble on their 37-yard line. Despite sophomore defensive back Matthew Ammann applying pressure and deflecting a touchdown pass, the Knights scored a 22-yard field goal, widening the gap to 26-0 at halftime.

The second half saw a stronger defensive effort from the Bearcats. Their defense applied great pressure and disrupted the Knights passing game, not allowing any additional points to be added to the scoreboard for the rest of the game.

The Bearcats finally broke through in the third quarter. Garcia completed a 15-yard pass to junior wide receiver Tre Clark to give the Bearcats their first points, cutting into the deficit and marking the score 26-7.

The Knights attempted to close out the game early in the fourth quarter by kicking a field goal, but the kick was no good, shifting to the right of the goalpost.

Junior defensive back Talen Freitas provided a late-game defensive highlight as he intercepted a pass deep in Bearcats territory on a Knight’s touchdown attempt, running the ball back into the Knights’ territory.

The Bearcats couldn’t capitalize before the time ran out and lost their second league game.

“We can’t keep turning the ball over,” head coach Matt Carroll said. “We turned the ball over about three or four times. That was huge. It cost us the game.”

The Bearcats have a bye next week as they prepare and make crucial adjustments to take on Mission College Prep on the road the following week on Oct. 25 at 7 p.m.
