    – The Paso Robles versus San Luis Obispo High School women’s basketball game was nothing but an upset for the Bearcats on Friday night.

The Bearcats (8-10, 1-1 Sunset) struggled on their homecourt to compete with the Tigers for their second league game of the season with a 60-19 defeat. While the league season still remains fresh, the Bearcats’ performance highlighted many areas for improvement as they prepare for the rest of the season.

The Bearcats came out to a slow first half, turning the ball over and unable to break the full-court press that the Tigers applied relentlessly throughout the game. Throwing the ball away during the press plagued the Bearcats, giving the Tigers easy scoring opportunities in transition.

“Transition defense is what got us,” head coach Mark Martinez said. “Then we just started forcing [passes] in the press.”

Trailing 32-10 at halftime, the Bearcats needed to devise a new game plan in the locker room after struggling to keep the deficit within reach.

Martinez stressed the importance of increasing effort in the second half, highlighting the lack of energy on defense as players struggled to sprint back and set up effectively.

“It’s not a jog; it’s a sprint,” Martinez urged the team during a third-quarter timeout, emphasizing the urgency needed on defense.

“We got beat in transitions,” Martinez said. “They killed us in transitions, and that was the game.”

Throughout the game, the Bearcats frequently executed crisp feeds into the paint, where sophomore forward Tori Holbrook positioned herself to catch and convert them into key baskets.

Holbrook led the Bearcats in scoring tonight, ending the game with eight points and acquiring three-fourths of the first-half points.

For the majority of the second half, players off the bench subbed in, hoping to outperform the starters and make up for the deficit caused by early mistakes.

Martinez’s focus on developing young talent

The Bearcats women’s team is a young core, with only one senior. The majority of the team is made up of juniors and sophomores. Forward Macoy Sill is the only freshman on the team.

Martinez benched the starters for the entire fourth quarter, giving younger players a chance to step up and showcase their talent on the court.

Martinez is laying the groundwork for the younger players, recognizing them as the rising stars of future seasons. He views these games as valuable learning experiences, emphasizing the need for the young players to develop their game.

“They got to develop,” Martinez said. “The starters were the ones who gave up the 20-point lead, so they deserved the opportunity to play.”

The Bearcats look to bounce back and correct errors in their next game on Tuesday, Jan. 21, at 6:30 p.m. on the road against Santa Ynez.
