Bearcats wrestlers place at invitational tournament
Bearcats finished 23rd out of 100 schools at the tournament
– Paso Robles High School wrestlers Pedro Coronado and Drake Mello earned top-eight finishes at the 69th Sam Boyd California Invitational Tournament, also known as the CIT, over the weekend.
The Bearcats finished 23rd out of 100 schools at the tournament, which featured highly ranked wrestlers from across the state.
Junior Drake Mello, competing in the 126-pound division, secured seventh place after entering the tournament as the 10th seed. Pedro Coronado, also a junior, placed eighth in the 150-pound division, exceeding his 12th seed placement.
“This is a very tough tournament competing against highly ranked wrestlers from all over the state,” said coach Nate Ybarra. “Good results for both of the boys.”
The team now shifts focus to preparing for the postseason, which begins in three weeks with the divisional tournament, followed by the masters and state tournaments at the end of February.
“We have a few injuries and sickness going on right now, so this will be a good time to focus our thoughts on postseason preparation to meet our goals,” Ybarra said.
The Bearcats continue their season with sights set on qualifying for the state meet.
