Big Brothers Big Sisters announces ‘Teen Bigs of the Year’
Big Brothers Big Sisters of San Luis Obispo County’s school-based mentoring program recently announced their “Teen Bigs of the Year” for the 2014-2015 school-year.
The title is reserved for one male and one female volunteer mentor at each school site. Recipients are chosen for their excellence as mentors and for having significant positive impact in the life of their mentees.
The winners of the award are:
· Morro Bay: Big Sister Madison Rice, a Morro Bay High School Student volunteering at Del Mar Elementary.
· San Luis Obispo: Big Brother Hillal Jarrar and Big Sister Isabella Stenval, San Luis Obispo High School students volunteering at Sinsheimer Elementary.
· Nipomo: Big Brother Joe Montanaro and Big Sister Kaitlynn Stratton, Nipomo High students volunteering at Nipomo Elementary.
Teen volunteers in the School Based Mentoring Program spend one after-school hour each week building an ongoing mentoring relationship with an elementary school child facing challenges or disadvantages.
Mentors support mentees by helping with homework, playing games, engaging in sports, making art, talking with them, and otherwise building healthy, strong relationships to nurture mentees’ potential. Currently, the program operates in Morro Bay, Nipomo and San Luis Obispo.
