Big Sur Land Trust hosting, ‘Race for Open Space’ in April
–Big Sur Land Trust will be hosting their Race for Open Space from April 4 through April 25. This live/virtual trail running event fosters an appreciation of conserved open spaces in Monterey County while celebrating the health benefits of time spent in nature.
From April 4 through 25, people can run or hike on designated trail courses and/or join the challenge to collectively log 10,000 miles as a community. Participants are invited to “DIY” their own experience by logging miles personally wherever they live; reserve a date to access Big Sur Land Trust properties and suggested courses; and/or select a time to experience one of two exclusive Adventure Courses beginning at Palo Corona Regional Park’s Discovery Center in Carmel.
All funds raised from this year’s Race for Open Space will further Big Sur Land Trust’s mission of, “inspiring love of land across generations, conservation of our unique Monterey County landscapes, and access to outdoor experiences for all.”
“With all of its challenges, 2020 reminded many of us how much we need time in natural, open spaces to find solace,” said Jeannette Tuitele-Lewis, President/CEO. “We are excited to offer this hybrid event so folks can participate no matter where they live – along with providing the opportunity to experience some incredible conserved landscapes.”
The Adventure Courses offer a unique opportunity on April 17, 18, and 24 for seasoned long-distance trail runners to access lands currently closed to the general public. We are grateful to our partners at Monterey Peninsula Regional Park District (MPRPD), California State Parks, the Santa Lucia Preserve, and the Santa Lucia Conservancy for making this special access possible. This is a unique opportunity to explore these conserved areas. Space is limited on each course. Online registration is required and closes April 10.
Big Sur Land Trust’s Race for Open Space adheres to local and state COVID-19 guidelines by eliminating in-person congregation, exclusively utilizing online registration and timeslot reservation, and requiring face coverings on trails when a six-foot distance cannot be maintained. Participants are required to carry their own water and nutrition, and are encouraged to carry a small medical kit as a precaution. Although cell phone reception is not guaranteed, participants are also encouraged to carry portable communication devices. There will be no onsite registration.
