Black Student Union hosting special event in Paso

Cuesta College’s Black Student Union (BSU) club will host the Power of Preparation, a special presentation with Belinda Bass, a human resources specialist with Scientific Drilling International. Bass will discuss how people are passed over for opportunities due to unpreparedness regarding mindset, research, attire, interview and resume.

The event, which is open to the public, is scheduled for Monday, March 16, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. on the college’s North County campus in Paso Robles, room N3213. A live feed of the event will also be available to those on the San Luis Obispo campus in room 3219.

“The purpose of this lecture is to further the Black Student Union’s goal of providing educational opportunities for African American students,” said Gary Rubin, Cuesta College business instructor and BSU faculty advisor. “Having a female, African American guest speaker who is accomplished in the business world will be empowering for female and African American students and community members.”

The BSU is an Associated Students of Cuesta College (ASCC) approved club that works to empower the college’s African American students by educating all students about the success and history of African Americans. The club also provides added services to the district in the form of educational opportunities to enhance the likelihood of success for African American students.

As a human resources professional, Bass has more than 16 years of experience as a senior recruiter and sourcer. She has worked for various Fortune 500 companies such as Tribune Media (Los Angeles Times), Time Warner, Paramount Pictures (Dr. Phil show), Mercury Insurance and JP Morgan Chase & Co.

With a branch in Paso Robles, Scientific Drilling International is an independent directional drilling and wellbore navigation, surveying and logging service company. For more information about the company and their services, visit scientificdrilling.com.
