Update July 14, 2015: – Investigators have determined that the cause of the Lake Nacimiento Deer Fire stemmed from an illegal marijuana grow operation, Cal Fire reported Sunday morning.
As of today, the fire is fully contained. The investigation into the cause of the fire led Cal Fire to discover the remote marijuana grow operation. Officials suspect whoever was tending the cannabis lit the fire that sparked it all, according to KSBY. Investigators believe that whoever was tending the operation lit a camping fire, or was smoking.
The plants were being grown underneath highly flammable manzanita plants, to disguise the plants from the air, which added fodder to the fire.
No one has been arrested yet as a result of the investigation, however many leads are being investigated, reports say.
Update 8:30 a.m., July 12, 2015 – The Deer Fire near Lake Nacimiento is 75-percent contained at 150 acres, according to a report from Cal Fire. Aircraft, engines and firefighters continue to the battle the blaze that started on Friday at 12:41 p.m. Cal Fire reports 379 personnel, 15 fire engines, 14 fire crews, two helicopters and a dozer at the scene south west of the lake. Two firefighters sustained injuries over the weekend, according to reports.

As of 6 a.m. Saturday morning, the fire was 20-percent contained, Cal Fire reports. No damages, injuries or evacuations have been reported. But the terrain is difficult and steep, Cal Fire reports.

Thank God for Cal Fire and all the support that has been given, I also pray that nothing else happens elsewhere that would draw their support from RDDR

We were on the Lake last night watching the helicopter as it made trip after trip sucking up the water. Back and forth, over and over. It was amazing to watch so close. As we keep watching the percentages go up! First it was 10% contained and now 75%! Getting to see firsthand, how much work is involved, makes you appreciate our fire fighters!

California is being overrun by the pot growers of the Mexican Drug Cartel. It would be intolerant to stop illegal-alien criminals from crossing the border.

James, I think more information is needed before jumping to such a racist conclusion. Just this week, a large pot farm was discovered in San Miguel with 1502 plants and the culprit was a white guy. No "Mexican Drug Cartels" were in the mix. We all jump to conclusions and want resolution on these issues but promoting racism without facts doesn't do a small community any favors.

Sunni Mullinax Actually you're the one jumping to conclusions. Yes, we know about the white guy growing marijuana near San Miguel. This pot grow was on someone's else's property with no home nearby. The use of manzanita, and the possibility of a camp fire, points to a possible drug cartel grow. You can't logically call people racists just because they oppose drug cartel operations here in Paso. Many immigrants are here because they fled the violence of the drug cartels in Mexico.
