Building slated to become new home for County Office of Social Services

– In late January of this year, the Paso Robles City Council approved an agreement with James and Debra Saunders for the sale of city-owned property located on the corner of 4th and Pine streets for private commercial use/improvements. Today, the demolition of the building is underway.

The city purchased the approximate 2.57 acre site in the early 1990’s for use of the existing building as an “Interim City Hall” during the construction of the current City Hall/Library facility. The city moved in 1995 and the building has remained vacant since that time.

The purchasing party has already developed two commercial buildings at the northeast corner of Spring and 4th streets. Those two buildings are part of a larger master plan concept which calls for a third office building to be constructed.

The Saunders’ wish to construct the third building for use by the County Office of Social Services.

The project staff report stated, “The proposed sale of this site to a private investor will allow this underutilized and blighted site to be revitalized and developed into an important/vibrant commercial anchor on the south end of town. The elimination of the visual blight at this gateway location will be a significant public improvement, as will the new ‘third’ commercial office building for county offices.”
