Cal Fire appoints new local unit chief

Cal Fire/San Luis Obispo County Fire Department announced this week the appointment of its new unit chief, Scotty Jalbert, effective April 1.

“Chief Jalbert will be an excellent Unit Chief and leader for CAL FIRE / San Luis Obispo,” Interim County Fire Chief Steve Reeder said. “I look forward to being his partner and working closely with him as he makes this transition to his new home.”

In his new role, Chief Jalbert will oversee the fire services for San Luis Obispo County, the City of Pismo Beach, and the communities of Los Osos and Avila Beach.

“We’re pleased to have Chief Jalbert aboard and know he has the skills and experience to get the job done and help keep county residents safe,” said County Administrative Officer Dan Buckshi. “He’s known for his integrity, ability to collaborate, and effective leadership skills. He’s just what this county needs in its new fire chief.”

Both Buckshi and Pismo Beach City Manager Jim Lewis had significant input in the decision to appoint Jalbert, who is transferring from San Mateo/Santa Cruz where he has been the Unit Chief since January 2013.

Chief Jalbert began his career with CAL FIRE in 1987 and worked as a Firefighter I in San Luis Obispo before promoting to San Mateo/Santa Cruz. He then promoted to Fire Apparatus Engineer in 1990, Fire Captain in 1998, Battalion Chief in 2006, Assistant Chief at Ben Lomond Camp in 2010, and Deputy Chief in 2011. He is also a fire instructor for City College of San Francisco and has a vocational teaching credential from the State of California for Fire Control Safety.

“We are looking forward to welcoming Chief Jalbert as the Pismo Beach Fire Chief,” Lewis said. “Chief Jalbert has a wide range of experience that will benefit our community and he has a history of collaborative, forward thinking decision making.”
