Cal Poly students build playhouses for local children

Four custom playhouses were built and delivered to families across San Luis Obispo County

    – The Cal Poly Girls Build Summer Academy partnered with Habitat for Humanity San Luis Obispo County this summer to build four custom playhouses for children in San Luis Obispo County while giving local high school girls hands-on construction experience.

During the weeklong camp, participants worked together to build and decorate playhouses while learning carpentry, teamwork, and construction safety. Guided by Cal Poly faculty members and industry professionals, the students gained practical construction experience.

The collaboration resulted in four custom playhouses, each designed and painted by the students before being delivered to local families through the organization’s Playhouse Program.

Academy founder and leader Stacy Kolegraff said the program combines practical skills with community service.

“I love being in an industry where you can learn practical skills, work with others who have a common purpose, and give back. We hope these girls will return next year, and we invite supporters and partners to stay involved and help shape future programs,” Kolegraff said.

Students also worked alongside volunteers and community partners throughout the project. After construction was completed, Habitat for Humanity San Luis Obispo County coordinated delivery and installation of the playhouses for recipient families.

Colleen Stefanek, the organization’s program manager, said the partnership is in its third year.

“This is our third year of this partnership, and I continue to be blown away by the skills and heart of these girls. Stacy Kolegraff has really created something unique and inspirational for our local girls to be able to learn the trades in a safe and welcoming way. Habitat SLO is proud to continue this partnership,” Stefanek said.

The Cal Poly Girls Build Summer Academy is a free, weeklong day camp for local high school girls hosted by Cal Poly’s Construction Management Department. Now in its fifth year, the program introduces participants to architecture, engineering, construction, and skilled trades through hands-on projects, tool safety training, and presentations from industry professionals and Cal Poly alumni.

Habitat for Humanity San Luis Obispo County’s Playhouse Program provides playhouses for local families as part of the organization’s community programs.
