Caltrans plans to quickly rebuild vital bridge

The Pfeiffer Canyon Bridge on State Route 1 in Monterey County was closed to pedestrian and vehicular traffic February 15, after heavy rains caused a landslide under the structure damaging one of its main support columns.

The bridge, which was built in 1968, was demolished over the span of a week. Engineers used a 6,000 ton wrecking ball and other equipment to strike precise points on the bridge to force it to break apart.

Caltrans interviews a bridge construction engineer and structure representative about plans to expedite the rebuilding of the expanse between the Big Sur community and the Monterey/Carmel area to the north: The video can be viewed at: http://www.dot.ca.gov/paffairs/newsflash/
