Caltrans to close median at Wellsona Road this week
Closure is one component of a larger project to construct an undercrossing beneath U.S. 101, south of the current Wellsona Road intersection
– Caltrans will close the median opening on U.S. 101 at Wellsona Road ahead of schedule as part of ongoing efforts to enhance work zone safety.
The closure will require alternating lane closures in both directions of U.S. 101 on Sunday, May 4 from 7 p.m. to 6 a.m. The decision was made in coordination with the primary contractor, the California Highway Patrol, and other transportation partners.
As part of the safety enhancement, crews will install a temporary concrete barrier across the intersection. The barrier will remain in place throughout the remaining stages of the project, consistent with the original construction plans.
The closure is one component of a larger project to construct an undercrossing beneath U.S. 101, south of the current Wellsona Road intersection. The new configuration will eliminate the need for left turns across traffic and will include a 112-foot-long bridge. A frontage road will connect the undercrossing with Wellsona Road on both sides of the highway.
The project is designed to reduce the number and severity of collisions at the U.S. 101 and Wellsona Road intersection. A detour is in place for bicycle riders. The San Paso Truck Stop will remain open and accessible during construction.
CalPortland Construction of Santa Maria is the contractor for the $12.2 million project. Construction is expected to be completed in early 2026.
