Cambria gallery presents textile works by artist Lori Shocket

Shocket’s works have appeared in museums and collections

The Vault Gallery has announced its representation of textile artist Lori Shocket.

The gallery, located at 2289 Main St. in Cambria, has exhibited painters, photographers, and sculptors on the Central Coast since 1991.

Shocket studied graphic design and advertising at Art Center College of Design and later worked as an art director and creative director in multiple industries. Her work has received several design awards.

According to the gallery, Shocket’s artistic practice has been influenced by travel to underserved communities and collaborative art projects with marginalized communities. Her work focuses on mixed-media and textile art.

“All works are created through an entirely hand-stitched process emphasizing the intimacy of mark and material,” Shocket said.

Her artwork has been displayed in galleries and included in private and corporate collections, including the Museum of Tolerance in Los Angeles, Community Memorial Hospital in Ventura, Dow Chemical in Collegeville, Pennsylvania, and the Jewish Museum of Baltimore in Maryland.

The gallery said Shocket has exhibited throughout Southern California and recently received Best of Show among 250 exhibitors at the Beverly Hills Art Show for a series of abstract textile painting collages that combine weaving and quilting techniques with abstract art.

Art critic Peter Frank wrote of Shocket’s work, “Art is the gesture with which a human either declares their singular contribution to the spirit of the world or embraces that spirit by beholding that contribution. Lori Shocket’s textile-paintings are like flags in this regard – banners of and for every and all humans.”

The Vault Gallery is open Thursday through Monday from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. and is closed Tuesday and Wednesday.
