Camp Roberts to host Cal Fire training burns this week, next

Child pulled from burning car, two injured after crash Sunday
    – Cal Fire will conduct a series of live fire training burns at Camp Roberts National Guard Base on May 13-15 and May 20-22 in cooperation with the military installation and air pollution control agencies in San Luis Obispo and Monterey counties.

According to the agency, the burns are part of a specialized training program for firefighters from across California focused on “fighting fire with fire” tactics, including firing operations used during wildland fire suppression and prescribed fire operations.

The agency said the training is intended to provide firefighters with hands-on experience in a controlled environment while improving coordination between agencies during wildfire incidents.

Residents in the San Miguel area, northwestern Paso Robles, and surrounding areas, including San Marcos Road and Nacimiento Lake Drive, may see smoke during the training operations. Smoke conditions may vary based on weather and wind conditions.

The agency advised children, older adults, and people with respiratory or heart conditions to use caution if smoke is visible or detectable in their area.

According to the agency, all burn operations depend on favorable weather and air quality conditions. Air quality agencies in San Luis Obispo and Monterey counties will monitor conditions during the training operations.
