CAPSLO announces new leadership

Yvette Sanchez-Fuentes.

–Community Action Partnership of San Luis Obispo County (CAPSLO) announces the hiring of Yvette Sanchez-Fuentes as the new Director of the Children, Youth, and Family Services Division. She steps into the shoes of Bill Castellanos, who retired in September after 35 years of service. Sanchez-Fuentes began her Director position at CAPSLO in August 2018. She oversees Head Start, Early Head Start, Migrant and Seasonal Head Start, and State Child Development Programs. Her responsibilities include services in 11 California counties. She comes to CAPSLO with an extensive background in Early Childhood Education and Advocacy experience. CAPSLO is pleased to welcome her back to San Luis Obispo after a long period in Washington, D.C.

Upon her graduation from Cal Poly San Luis Obispo, Sanchez-Fuentes became an early childhood teacher. Her career at CAPSLO began in 1998 when she was hired as a Family Child Care Coordinator. In 2004, Sanchez-Fuentes was accepted into the Head Start Fellows Program in Washington, D.C. She then served as Executive Director of the Migrant and Seasonal Head Start Association from 2006-2009, which led to her appointment as the Director of Head Start at the Department of Health and Human Services during the Obama Administration. Before returning to San Luis Obispo with her family, she served in policy roles for the Aspen Institute and Child Care Aware of America.

“Yvette is uniquely qualified to step into the CYFS Division Director position. All of Yvette’s work experiences have revolved around children and their families and improving the quality of life for all. Her education, experience and involvement in setting policy for Head Start and Child Care at the federal level is invaluable to all of us here at CAPSLO” said CAPSLO CEO, Biz Steinberg. Sanchez-Fuentes stated, “I started at CAPSLO and now I want to return to oversee the division I began in so many years ago.”
