Carbajal campaign ad features incorrect mudslide footage

–A campaign ad produced by the Salud Carbajal campaign featured an inaccuracy that the campaign says they will be correcting and re-sending to television stations today.

The ad, which was designed to highlight Carbajal’s response to the Montecito mudslides that killed 23, started with overhead footage of what appears to be the Burbank mudslide, according to KSBY.

Carbajal, a Democrat, is running for re-election in the 24th Congressional District against Republican Justin Fareed. The 2018 General Election will be on Nov. 6.

Fareed released the following statement regarding the discrepancy:

“Many of us here remember, in painstaking detail, the debris flows on January 9 of this year that claimed many lives and property in Montecito. It was surely one the worst disasters to ever hit the Central Coast.

“I will never forget the details of that day. I remember helping neighbors who lost all in their search for loved ones – wading waist deep in mud. I remember seeing the pain in the eyes of childhood friends, knowing their lives would be forever changed by the loss of family members that day. Graphic images remain in the forefront of my mind, each night, as I close my eyes to sleep. It’s disappointing that our Congressman gave such little thought to important details when bringing this tragedy into the political spotlight. Families will never see their parents or their children again, neighbors I grew up with will never be able to return home, and Salud Carbajal just cares about scoring points and saving his political career.

“When disaster happens, it’s overwhelming, devastating; but in the spirit of recovery, our community pulled together. The government has a responsibility to help, too. We can come back stronger, but not if we let political games get in the way. Our people deserve resources, results, and a practical plan to keep this from happening again. My duty is to you, not politics or special interests – just you.”
