The San Luis Obispo County Board of Supervisors is scheduled to vote Tuesday on whether to approve a $1.7 million bid to demolish and reconstruct a large portion of that pier.
The bid was submitted by the Morro Bay-based company Associated Pacific Constructors, Inc., and a yes vote is recommended by the county’s General Services Agency.
The pier was built in 1872 and is nearly a thousand feet long. According to the county, in recent years it has deteriorated beyond public use—helped along by several extreme surf events.
Should the bid win approval Tuesday, demolition could begin as soon as next month, with completion sometime in May.
The overall Cayucos Pier Project runs more than $4 million with funding provided by a variety of sources, including a half million dollars in local donations.

As a youngster, I went with my Uncle to board fishing boats from that pier. In later years, I returned in my own boat and found I could not even pull up alongside of it because the water was too shallow. I was told that part of the end had been torn off and sand had washed in during those intervening years. So has there been any consideration of dredging, or lengthening the structure?
