CHP officer killed in line of duty

–A bell toll tribute ceremony will be held in memory of California Highway Patrol Officer Kirk Griess who was killed while conducting a traffic stop on Interstate 80 in Fairfield on Friday.  He and the driver of the vehicle that he had stopped were both killed when a third driver drifted off the roadway and collided with the motorcycle and the stopped car.

Griess, 46, was a 19-year veteran of the CHP. He is survived by his wife, Keri: adult daughters Kadi and Kaci; and son, Kole, 14.

The ceremony will take place at the CHP Academy, located at 3500 Reed Ave., in West Sacramento.
