Christkindmarkt, a German Christmas Market, benefits the San Luis Obispo Symphony

Allegretto Vineyard Resort in Paso Robles is sponsoring a California style German Christmas Market, or Christkindmarkt, to benefit the San Luis Obispo Symphony. The event is Sun, Dec 3 from 2–5 p.m. at Allegretto Vineyard Resort, 2700 Buena Vista Drive in Paso Robles. The market is open to the public with complimentary wine tasting and other food and beverage items for purchase. At sunset, there will be caroling and a tree lighting ceremony.

The Christ Child Market, Christkindmarkt in German, is a tradition that dates back to the 1200s in Eastern Europe. Celebrated in the anticipation of the Messiah coming, the Christmas Market is traditionally held in the town square where food, drink and seasonal items are sold in the open air. Traditional singing, dancing and items such as nutcrackers, candied and toasted almonds, Christmas cookies, gingerbread, bratwurst and mulled wine are sold. The oldest Christmas Market is said to have started in Vienna, Austria in 1298 as a forerunner to German markets in Munich (1310), Bautzen (1384), Frankfurt (1393) and Dresden (1434). Each year these markets attract millions of visitors.

After the market, join Holiday Magic at 5 p.m. with a concert by the Symphony Brass Ensemble, playing traditional classical and Christmas music. The repertoire for the evening includes “Carol of the Bells,” “What Child is This,” “Silent Night,” “O Christmas Tree,” as well as Sonata Allegro from Symphony No. 13 by Mozart, Christmas Song by Saint-Saens and Achieved is the Glorious Work by Haydn. Concert tickets are $35 for adults and $10 for children (18 and under). Purchase tickets from the SLO Symphony website.

Afterward, Allegretto is offering concertgoers a special Prix Fix dinner for $48 prepared by Chef Picard at its Cello Ristorante and Bar. Reservations for dinner are limited and available at OpenTable. Want to continue the fun into the night? The resort is offering a special room rate of $159 as well.
