Citizen’s Climate Lobby creating North County chapter

Group is lobbying for proposed carbon fee, dividend policy Climate lobby

–The Citizen’s Climate Lobby will be creating a chapter in North County. The first general meeting of the Paso Robles Citizens’ Climate Lobby will be held on Saturday, May 14 at 9:30 a.m. in the Common Room at 635 Nicklaus, in Paso Robles. Any one interested in finding out more about the organization and what steps can be taken to address climate change is invited to attend.

The group believes that climate change is real and is happening now. Their goal is to create broad-based legislation/regulation to limit release of carbon to 350 ppm globally through implementation of their Carbon Fee & Dividend Policy Proposal.

Carbon Fee and Dividend Policy Proposal

Carbon Fee and Dividend is the policy proposal created by lobby to account for the costs of burning carbon-based fuels. They say it’s the policy that climate scientists and economists believe is the best first-step to reduce the likelihood of catastrophic climate change from global warming.

Their carbon fee and dividend proposal would work like this:

  •  A fee is placed on fossil fuels at the source (well, mine, port of entry). This fee starts at $15 per ton of C02 equivalent emissions, and increases steadily each year by $10.
  • All of the money collected is returned to American households on an equal basis. Under this plan about 2/3 of all households would break even or receive more in their dividend checks than they would pay in higher prices due to the fee.
  • A border tariff adjustment on goods imported from or exported to countries without an equivalent price on carbon. This adjustment would both discourage businesses from relocating to where they can emit more C02 and encourage other nations to adopt an equivalent price on carbon.

They believe that a predictably increasing carbon price will send a clear market signal which will unleash entrepreneurs and investors in the new clean-energy economy.

Their North County Chapter goal: Support the National CCL through the following objectives:

Recruit
• Establish core group of members who will coordinate specific task areas, lead teams and maintain communication with chapter at large through meetings and newsletters.
• Grow chapter membership at large

Educate
• Learn and be able to discuss basic climate change science and the fee and dividend policy proposal
• Develop and give presentations to groups and organizations
• Write letters to editors and opinion pieces for news outlets
• Disseminate climate change and fee & dividend information through whatever media possible- social, on-air, tabling, etc.

Lobby
• Meet with editorial boards, business leaders, elected officials, bureaucrats etc., on the urgency of the issue and the need for legislation to enact a carbon fee & dividend policy.
• Work to make climate change a bi-partisan issue; track candidates and publicly ask for action.
