John Hamon Jr. Paso Robles City Council

John Hamon Jr. is seeking a third term on the Paso Robles City Council.

San Luis Obispo County Supervisor and former Paso Robles Mayor Frank Mecham has endorsed John R. Hamon Jr. for the Paso Robles City Council in the upcoming Nov. 4 election.

“While serving as your mayor and now as the first district supervisor, I have worked with John on numerous boards and a variety of issues. His steady hand, common sense approach and strong business background will continue to serve our city well,” Mecham says.

Hamon, a fourth generation son of the Central Coast and owner of Hamon Overhead Door Company, is running for his third term on the Paso Robles City Council. Hamon’s Portuguese great-grandfather arrived to the country from the Azores to work on the Cuesta Grade train tunnel project in the 1890s.

“Growing up, we were taught to be determined — to see things through, prudent — to exercise good judgment, and to always be honest, consistent and dependable,” Hamon said. “These and the many other leadership qualities learned at home and through Scouting earned me the Eagle Scout Rank at the early age of 14.”

He went to college in 1972 and graduated from Cal Poly in 1976 with a Bachelor of Arts from the School of Industrial Technology.

“I married my wife Marjorie; we began our household of four and a family business in the garage door industry with only one employee,” Hamon said. “Working long hard 60 hour weeks, making mostly the right decisions, and investing wisely in myself and others, I consider Hamon Overhead Door Company, after 38 years, a trade leader on our Central Coast with two stores and employing 17 people.”

Hamon said he has served the community by being an Eucharistic Minister at St. Rose Catholic Church, being a committee chair for Boy Scout Troop 60 and its charter representative, volunteer firefighter and captain for the city’s fire department, Paso Robles Rotary Club member and president in 2004, member and chair of Paso Robles Planning Commission, founding and current board member for Paso Robles Children’s Museum, past Paso Robles Chamber of Commerce board member, and was an Industrial Technology Department advisory board member.

“A personal goal and, following my father’s lead, I earned my wings, I have been an active pilot and aircraft owner here at our airport for the last 36 years,” Hamon said.

As a member of the Paso Robles City Council since 2006, he has served on the Integrated Waste Management Authority as board member and past chair, San Luis Obispo County Air Pollution Control District as board member and past chair, the Nacimiento Water Project Commission as board member and past chair, city council liaison for the Paso Robles Youth Sports Commission, Paso Robles High School Youth Leadership Commission, the Paso Robles Parks and Recreation Commission and the Paso Robles Airport Advisory Committee.

“I am an experienced, proven, and trusted leader in matters of city and county government,” Hamon said. “As a financially responsible small business owner, I vote with a practical, common sense approach with spending precious public tax dollars and listen carefully to our Roblans’ concerns on issues that they are passionate about. I appreciate hearing good suggestions and carrying their message to the Dias. I strive to always work collaboratively with my other colleagues to arrive upon a mutual agreement that is beneficial to all concerned.”

If elected to another term, he said he wants to continue to get Paso Robles back to pre-recession levels of service for streets, parks and building maintenance. He wants Centennial Park’s pool to reopen for the summer of 2015. He also wants to enhance public safety: add police officers to traffic patrol and gang enforcement, provide firefighters with replacement equipment and one new structure fire engine. He also wants to complete the water plant upgrade and the new Nacimiento Water plant projects.

“Very importantly, I want to continue my conservative voting record to use public tax dollars in the most resourceful way possible,” Hamon said. “Recently, I was the only councilman to not support employee salary increases and voted no. I felt that it more wise to place returning revenue back into our public services first like the Centennial Pool and landscape maintenance … I remain committed to always working in the best interest of Paso Robles and to continue representing our citizens’ best hopes for our town.”
