City hosting second workshop on by-district elections

paso robles voting districts–The City of Paso Robles is holding its last in a series of public meetings on its change to by-district city council elections and is seeking public input on the change. The workshop will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 27, at 6:30 p.m. at the Paso Robles High School Library, 801 Niblick Road.

Prompted by a legal challenge that alleges the current city council election system in Paso Robles violates the California Voting Rights Act of 2002, the City of Paso Robles is transitioning from the current at-large system of electing the city council to a by-district elections model.

Residents are being asked to submit suggested boundary maps splitting the city into 4 voting districts, each district to be represented by a council member who will be elected by the residents within that district in the 2020 election and beyond.

By law, the city must adopt a voting district boundary map by April 30, 2019. The City of Paso Robles is inviting interested parties to attend a map-building workshop to learn the parameters for building a successful voting map. The workshop will explain the reason for the change to district voting, best practices for creating successful boundary maps and how to use the online map-drawing tool.
