City of Paso Robles receives approval for watershed maintenance program

Renewed Waste Discharge Requirements allow ongoing maintenance work in local waterways, including the Salinas River and its tributaries

    – The City of Paso Robles has received approval from the Central Coast Regional Water Quality Control Board to continue its Annual Flood Control and Fire Fuel Load Reduction Project under a Waste Discharge Requirements order.

The renewed order allows continued implementation of Best Management Practices, along with monitoring and reporting requirements intended to ensure maintenance work is conducted in compliance with state regulations.

The program authorizes ongoing maintenance activities in local waterways, including areas along the Salinas River and its tributaries. It includes vegetation management, habitat enhancement, and sediment removal intended to maintain water flow and reduce combustible vegetation.

The renewal builds on a previous five-year order issued to the city in 2021. During that period, the city conducted vegetation management and sediment removal intended to reduce localized flooding and mitigate wildfire risk.

The order also includes environmental offset measures, including ongoing trash removal. The city has removed debris from the Salinas River corridor during the program, which officials said has supported watershed conditions and downstream water quality.

The program has also been described as a model for municipalities across California, demonstrating that vegetation management can reduce wildfire risk while protecting riparian environments such as the Salinas River corridor.

“These annual maintenance activities are essential to protecting our community,” said Deputy Fire Chief Enns. “They reduce the community’s risk of both wildfire and flooding while ensuring we meet all environmental regulatory requirements.”

The Annual Flood Control and Fire Fuel Load Reduction Project is a component of the city’s broader efforts to protect public safety, preserve infrastructure, and manage natural resources.
