City prepares for flooding as storm approaches Paso Robles

More than a half an inch of rain in the forecast today

    – A storm associated with an atmospheric river is expected to bring significant rainfall and wind gusts up to 45 mph in the Paso Robles area this week. The storm is forecast to be heaviest from Thursday morning into Thursday evening, with peak precipitation rates potentially reaching 1 inch per hour and several inches of rain expected.

Weather Underground is predicting .55 inches of rain today, and 1.41 inches of rain tomorrow. The city water yard downtown measured .12 inches of rain this morning over the past 24 hours, bringing the rainfall season total to 4.29 inches.

City staff have been preparing by monitoring and addressing storm drain systems, clearing debris from flood-prone areas, preparing equipment for immediate response, and making staff available to respond to issues as they arise.

Free sand is available for residents at the City Streets Yard, 1220 Paso Robles Street. Residents must bring their own sandbags and shovels and load materials themselves.

Sandbags are available for purchase at several local vendors:

    • Burt Industrial Supply, 2125 Golden Hill Road, (805) 237-2471
    • Lowe’s, 2445 Golden Hill Road, (805) 602-9051
    • Blake’s Hardware, 1701 Riverside Avenue, (805) 238-3934
    • SiteOne Hardscape Center, 1108 Paso Robles Street, (805) 239-4317
    • Farm Supply, 2450 Ramada Drive, (805) 238-1177

Saturated ground and strong winds increase the potential for downed trees and power lines. Officials advise residents to remain aware of their surroundings, drive safely, stay clear of downed utility lines, and avoid all water crossings.

Power outages should not be reported to 911. Residents can report outages to PG&E at (800) 743-5000 or visit www.pge.com for more information.
