City residents should prepare yards for fire season by May 1

–To prepare for the upcoming fire season, Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services would like to remind residents and property owners about the city’s weed abatement program. This program is designed to keep the city fire-safe by ensuring that yards and larger land parcels are cleared of combustible vegetation and debris. Property within the city must have all weeds mowed, disced, or otherwise removed to lessen fire hazards.

With the lack of seasonal rain this year, it is especially important that property owners reduce hazardous vegetation as soon as possible. Please clear all combustible vegetation, including dead leaves, weeds, brush, and tree limbs no later than May 1, 2021. Property owners should also remove excess trash, wood, and other combustibles from their property (see clearance guide). While May 1 is the deadline, the department encourages residents to keep properties cleared at all times.

Clearance guidelines:

  • Clear lots by mowing or discing to a maximum height of 4 inches. This includes vegetation that may be green now but dries later. Remove all cuttings.
  • Clearance shall be a minimum of 50 feet in width at the perimeter of a parcel and from any roadway, a minimum of 100 feet around all structures, abatement should not disturb the soil under oak trees.
  • Clear all dead leaves, weeds, brush, trees, and tree limbs.
  • Remove excess trash, wood, or other combustibles from the property.

For questions about the requirements or need the names of vendors who perform weed abatement and lot cleaning, call Paso Robles Fire and Emergency Services at (805) 227-7560, or visit their office at 900 Park Street in Paso Robles.
