City shares information on how to create emergency supply kit
– The City of Paso Robles recently shared information on its Facebook page about how to make an emergency supply kit.
In the event of an emergency, households may need to be self-sufficient for several days. An emergency supply kit containing essential items such as food, water, and other supplies is crucial for survival in such situations.
A basic disaster supplies kit should be assembled and stored in airtight plastic bags. All items should be placed in one or two easy-to-carry containers, such as plastic bins or duffel bags. The following are recommended items to include in your emergency supply kit:
Basic Emergency Supply Kit
- Water: One gallon per person per day, sufficient for several days for both drinking and sanitation.
- Food: At least a several-day supply of non-perishable food.
- Battery-powered or hand crank radio: Include a NOAA Weather Radio with a tone alert.
- Flashlight: Ensure you have extra batteries.
- First aid kit.
- Whistle: For signaling for help.
- Dust mask: To help filter contaminated air.
- Plastic sheeting, scissors, and duct tape: For sheltering in place.
- Moist towelettes, garbage bags, and plastic ties: For personal sanitation.
- Wrench or pliers: To turn off utilities if necessary.
- Manual can opener: For canned food.
- Local maps.
- Cell phone with chargers and a backup battery.
Additional Emergency Supplies
Depending on individual needs, consider adding the following items:
- Soap, hand sanitizer, and disinfecting wipes: For disinfecting surfaces.
- Prescription medications: Keep a supply organized, as emergencies can make refills or finding an open pharmacy difficult.
- Non-prescription medications: Include pain relievers, anti-diarrhea medication, antacids, and laxatives.
- Prescription eyeglasses and contact lens solution.
- Infant needs: Include formula, bottles, diapers, wipes, and diaper rash cream.
- Pet supplies: Include pet food and extra water.
- Cash or traveler’s checks.
- Important family documents: Copies of insurance policies, identification, and bank account records should be saved electronically or stored in a waterproof, portable container.
- Sleeping bag or warm blanket: One for each person.
- Complete change of clothing: Appropriate for your climate, plus sturdy shoes.
- Fire extinguisher.
- Matches: Store in a waterproof container.
- Feminine supplies and personal hygiene items.
- Mess kits: Include paper cups, plates, paper towels, and plastic utensils.
- Paper and pencil.
- Entertainment items: Books, games, puzzles, or other activities for children.
