Update: One fatality and multiple injuries reported after accident near San Miguel

Update posted Sept. 23, 7 a.m.

Investigations reveal tire failure appears to have caused the accident

– The California Highway Patrol has released more information regarding the accident that occurred near San Miguel yesterday. On Wednesday around 12:38 p.m., a driver of a 2003 Nissan Frontier was traveling North on Highway 101 north of Monterey Road at an undetermined speed when it appears that the vehicle may have experienced a tire failure. The driver reacted by applying the brakes and applying “excessive steering” to the left. This turning movement caused the vehicle to cross the northbound lanes and dirt median. As the vehicle transitioned from the median to the Southbound lanes, it overturned and came to rest on its roof, partially pinning the driver.

Emergency medical personnel responded and the driver was transported via air ambulance to Sierra Vista where he was pronounced deceased. 37-year-old Maricela Vasquez of San Miguel, a passenger in the vehicle, sustained a broken arm and likely a broken shoulder. She was transported by ground ambulance to Sierra Vista. A second passenger, 22-year-old Raul Gonzalez, had a minor complaint of pain and was treated and released on the scene. No other vehicles were involved in the crash. The preliminary investigation did not reveal any indications of drug or alcohol influence nor any indications of driver inattention, such as cell phone use.

The identify of the driver is pending notification of next of kin.
