Column: On the wine road with Orion Stang
– Kicking off the month of July, Orion Stang, winemaker/owner of Emercy Wines (tasting room in Tin City, Paso Robles), along with his associate Ben Morris, hit the road to Woodland Hills in Southern California for a special “pre-July 4th” wine event at the home of one of his longtime supporters.
Orion has been a well-regarded winemaker in Paso Robles since launching his Dilecta label about 15 years ago. His current project, Emercy Wines, focuses on Rhône and Bordeaux varieties and blends, using grapes sourced from outstanding vineyards such as Bien Nacido and G2.
As guests arrived on this pleasant July 2 evening, they were greeted with a glass of rosé and then tasted a variety of wines from the lineup. The evening began on a delicious note as the hosts’ pizza oven heated up to bake a variety of gourmet pizzas to accompany the wines Orion and Ben were pouring.
Orion has found that “in-home” events offer him and wine lovers the chance to dive deep into the wines and to casually discuss his winemaking process and philosophy in an unstructured, relaxed atmosphere, enjoying wine, food, and company. One of the things Orion likes most about these gatherings is the chance to really get to know the people who support his brand, introduce new people to his wines, and share an evening with a variety of individuals who have so much in common.
During the evening, Orion and a group of about 25 sat, sipped, socialized, ate, and talked about wine and the incredible Paso Robles wine culture and what it offers.
