Community gathers for Hanukkah celebration in downtown Paso Robles

    Fire department assists with ‘gelt-drop’

    – More than one hundred people attended Sunday evening’s Hanukkah celebration in the Downtown City Park in Paso Robles.

Rabbi Meir Gordon spoke about the significance of the holiday. A seven-foot Menorah was lit. Later, the Paso Robles Fire Department helped with a “gelt-drop” from the top of the ladder of the hook and ladder fire truck. Gelt is a Yiddish word meaning money and commonly refers to chocolate coins given during Hanukkah.

Those who attended enjoyed traditional Hanukkah food and music.

Hanukkah celebrates an event that is believed to have occurred more than two thousand years ago, when a menorah with only enough sacred oil to burn for one day miraculously burned for eight. It’s also called the Festival of Lights.

The Jewish community in the North County, their friends and family, celebrated the beginning of Hanukkah, which began Sunday at sunset and runs for eight days.

It was the first Hanukkah for Evangeline Bradley.
