Community leaders, citizens work to draw district boundaries

Newly elected city councilwoman Maria Elena Garcia worked on boundary exercise with Councilman Fred Strong.

–At the Paso Robles Public Safety Center Thursday night, local community leaders and citizens worked on boundaries for city council seats. Some drew boundaries with felt pens on maps of the city. Most used a computer software system to create district boundaries.

Two council members, a school board trustee, city staff and other members of the community worked to create four same-sized districts in the city of Paso Robles.

Newly elected city councilwoman Maria Elena Garcia worked on boundary exercise with Councilman Fred Strong.

The city is forced to draw boundaries for city council districts to avoid an expensive lawsuit by Kevin Shenkman, a Malibu attorney who is suing hundreds of municipalities in the state. He’s invoking the California Voting Rights Act in his lawsuits.

The latest local group to be impacted, the Paso Robles School District. They were contacted by Shenkman this week. The trustees will now have to go through the same boundary creating process. Trustee Chris Bausch attended last night’s workshop at the Paso Robles Public Safety Center.
