Candidate says he felt compelled to run to bring a, ‘local and younger voice’ to Congress

–Republican Congressional candidate Justin Fareed visited with potential voters at the home of Howie and Bev Steinbeck, the owners of Steinbeck Winery, Monday afternoon in Paso Robles.

The Steinbeck’s grandson, Ryan Newkirk, met Fareed at an event a few months ago and said he was impressed with Fareed from the get-go. That led him to host the event at his grandparents’ home, so people in the North County could have the opportunity to meet him.

“I’ve had a chance to visit with him several times over the last few months,” Newkirk said. “I asked him, ‘so what makes you at 27 qualified?’ He explained his background in business, in Washington. It’s really impressive for someone my age to have the kind of experience he does.”

Fareed briefly addressed the intimate crowd assembled in the Steinbeck’s home, telling them why he’s running. He said after working for a senior member of Congress he felt compelled to run for office to bring a local voice and a younger voice.

“I’m passionate about this,” the 27-year-old from Goleta said. “Why am I, at my age, running for Congress? The reason I’m doing it is because I think it’s necessary … to inject new life and energy into it.”

He said that he has traveled through the district and has talked with ranchers and small business owners, college students and families about their concerns.

“For the first time in America, the next generation is inheriting a quality of life that is worse than that of the previous generation,” Fareed said. “Career politician have failed to provide solutions. They have kicked the can down the road in the interest of political expediency, rather than providing the leadership our country so desperately needs.”

Fareed said addressing the national debt issue is one of his platforms.

“Our government continues to spend more money than it has,” Fareed said. “We need to have a budget process that works. … My goal is to make it more efficient and more lean.”

Fareed had officially announced his campaign in Santa Barbara earlier that day. He is running for the 24th Congressional District, which encompasses Santa Barbara County, San Luis Obispo County, and part of Ventura County.

Fareed will face off against Democrats Helene Schneider, Salud Carbajal and Bill Ostrander and Republicans Katcho Achadjian and Tyler Gross. For more information on Fareed, go to www.justinfareed.com.
