Fareed leads Achadjian in congressional primary

Justin Fareed is narrowly leading Katcho Achadjian for the chance to face Democratic candidate Salud Carbajal during the general election in November. Carbajal garnered 32.7-percent of the votes in the district. Fareed has received 20.5-percent, while Achadjian follows close behind with 18.9-percent as of 5:59 a.m., with 100-percent of the districts partially reporting, according to the California Secretary of State. 

There were nine candidates running to succeed retiring nine-term Democratic U.S. Rep. Lois Capps. Also running was Democrat Benjamin Lucas, who received .7 percent of the votes, Democrat William Ostrander, who received 5.5-percent, Democrat Helene Schneider, who received 14.4-percent, Republican Matt Kokkonen, who received 5.3-percent. Non-affiliated candidates Steve Isakson and John Ubersax received 1.0-percent and .9-percent, respectively.

The 24th Congressional District encompasses Santa Barbara County, San Luis Obispo County, and part of Ventura County.

• Helene Schneider (D), 20,992 votes, 14.4 percent
• William “Bill” Ostrander (D), 8,048 votes 5.5 percent
• Benjamin Lucas (D), 1,013 votes, 0.7 percent

• Justin Donald Fareed (R), 29,902 votes, 20.5 percent
• K.H. Katcho Achadjian (R), 27,545 votes, 18.9 percent
• Matt T. Kokkonen (R), 7,779 votes, 5.3 percent

• Steve Isakson (no party), 1,444 votes, 1 percent
• John Uebersax (no party), 1,330 votes, 0.9 percent
