Congressman says Trump’s tariffs hurt California businesses and farmers
Trump delays tariffs after widespread criticism from business leaders
– President Donald Trump announced a delay in implementing 25% tariffs on imported goods from Canada and Mexico, prompting a response from Rep. Salud Carbajal (D-Santa Barbara), according to a recent press release from the congressman.
Carbajal criticized the tariffs, stating they would burden American consumers and businesses. “A tariff is a tax on American consumers, forcing them to pay more for their food, their appliances, and even their construction materials as many Californians work to rebuild their homes after devastating fires,” he said.
He added that the tariffs would harm California farmers, growers, and manufacturers that rely on North American markets. “Donald Trump saw today the widespread concern with declaring a trade war on two of our largest trading partners and found a way to save face,” Carbajal said.
Earlier in the day, the S&P 500 dropped nearly 1.9%, reducing its market value by nearly $1 trillion, while the Dow Jones fell more than 600 points following the tariff announcement, according to Carbajal.
The U.S. Chamber of Commerce, the National Association of Manufacturers, the American Farm Bureau, and other business groups criticized the proposed tariffs.
Carbajal, who represents California’s 24th Congressional District, said he will continue working in Congress to prevent additional costs for constituents.

The ONLY TIME that Carbajal helped a Farmer is when they applied a moratorium on Avocado’s. Guess where the Avocados are grown in his district.? Liberal South County.
