Bike event raises funds for local cancer patients

As the countdown begins for the 7th annual Tour of Paso Founder’s Team Challenge, sign-ups are still underway. This annual bike ride and wine fest takes place on March 21 and directly benefits the Cancer Support Community of the California Central Coast.

“There’s still time to sign up for the Tour of Paso and join in on the fun,” said CSCCCC Executive Director Christie Kelly. “We also have options for those that want to rent a bike or just come out for the barbecue.”

All skill levels, from beginners to advanced, are offered their choice of three routes – 50, 26 and 4-miles – through the Paso Robles wine country region, all starting and ending at Niner Wine Estates off Highway 46 West. Riders raising more than $500 are eligible for prizes donated by local businesses; an awards ceremony and barbecue lunch will take place at the finish line party.

Registration for the bike event begins at 8 a.m. on Saturday with the 26 and 50-mile rides starting at 9 a.m. followed by the 4-mile at 10 a.m. The registration fee is $60, with $200 in sponsorship funds raised or donated required to participate. Want to enjoy the barbecue and music afterwards but don’t want to participate in the bike ride? No problem – a $25 donation will get you in to enjoy the food and festivities.

“The routes take riders along scenic country roads,” said Kelly, “and we have great prizes, food, wine, music and more to help us celebrate. Anyone that does not have a bike but would still like to participate can borrow one thanks to Paso Bike Tours. And remember that even if you are not riding you can still enjoy the great barbecue at the end of the ride.”

Several local businesses and organizations have formed teams for the Founder’s Team Challenge including Best Bike Zone and Il Cortile. Teams and individuals will help raise funds that will provide free cancer support for patients, caregivers and loved ones throughout San Luis Obispo County.

“The teams really get into the ride,” said Kelly, “and they have a lot of fun – it’s a bit of healthy competition.”
