County announces new deputy director for airport operations

Leadership change marks next phase for county airport system
– The County of San Luis Obispo Department of Airports has appointed Tim O’Keeffe as the new deputy director of operations and maintenance, effective Nov. 23. O’Keeffe will assume the position as longtime Deputy Director Craig Piper concludes a 25-year career with the department.
According to the department, O’Keeffe emerged as the top candidate during the recruitment process and demonstrated alignment with the department’s values and long-term vision. His leadership approach emphasizes collaboration, accountability, and respect.
O’Keeffe showed an understanding of airport operations, safety, and team development. He will begin the role with a structured transition plan to ensure continuity of leadership and a smooth handoff of responsibilities as Piper prepares for retirement.
“Tim brings the right blend of experience, leadership, and character to this critical role,” Director of Airports Courtney Johnson said, “His dedication to fostering strong teams, advancing operational reliability, and supporting a positive customer experience reflects the direction in which our airport system is moving. We are excited to welcome Tim into this position and confident he will help guide our department into its next chapter.”
O’Keeffe will oversee the operations and maintenance division for both SLO County Airport and Oceano Airport. His responsibilities will support efforts to strengthen reliability, enhance efficiency, and maintain service standards for the community. He assumes the position now to ensure a seamless transition as Piper is set to retire in May of 2026.
The department expressed appreciation to Piper for his 25 years of service and his contributions to strengthening aviation in San Luis Obispo County.
