About 50 local dignitaries and guests attended a ground breaking ceremony Wednesday afternoon for the new San Luis Obispo County Juvenile Hall on Kansas Avenue ay Highway 1 in San Luis Obispo.

The County Supervisors joined with San Luis Obispo County Probation Department Chief James Salio in scooping up ceremonial dirt to begin the construction. The total size of the expansion will be 23,416 square feet at a cost of about $20 million, $13 million of which will be paid for by State funds. San Luis Obispo County allocated $6,839,885.

The expansion project will add 20 single occupancy sleeping rooms, three classrooms, a mental health treatment office, two interview/counseling rooms, a multipurpose gymnasium, staff bathrooms, male and female staff locker rooms, a training/conference room, and staff offices to the existing San Luis Obispo County Juvenile Hall.

Diani Building Corporation of Santa Maria will build the new facility. It is expected to be completed in two years. The architectural firm responsible for the design of the new construction is Ravatt, Albrecht & Associates, Incorporated.
