County launches 2025-26 student elections ambassador program

    – The San Luis Obispo County Elections Office has announced the launch of its 2025-26 Student Election Ambassador Program and is accepting applications through May 16 from students across the county, ages 16 to 18.

The program, beginning this fall in partnership with the League of Women Voters San Luis Obispo, is intended to provide students with tools, training, and support to carry out voter outreach and registration efforts. Selected ambassadors will earn community service hours and gain experience in civic engagement, leadership, and project management.

Participants in the program will learn about the history and importance of voting, receive training in voter registration and pre-registration practices, organize at least two outreach events during the school year, and promote civic participation through campus events, community outreach, and digital campaigns.

The Elections Office will provide each student with a voter outreach kit, access to event materials, and an assigned advisor for year-round guidance. Two Zoom check-in meetings—one in fall and one in spring—will allow students to share ideas and coordinate efforts with other ambassadors.

Applications can be submitted online. Selected students will be notified in late May and invited to attend a kickoff meeting in August at the San Luis Obispo County Elections Center.

“We’re excited to offer this opportunity for students to take a leading role in engaging their peers in civic participation,” said Clerk-Recorder Elaina Cano. “This program will not only strengthen youth engagement in elections but also foster a deeper understanding of the importance of voter participation.”
