Crimson Newsmagazine heading to Philadelphia to accept Pacemaker Finalist award

Newsmagazine is one of 12 schools honored in California among 41 schools

    – Paso Robles High School’s Crimson Newsmagazine has been named a 2024 Pacemaker Finalist by the National Scholastic Press Association (NSPA), recognizing it as one of the top high school journalism publications in the United States. Crimson Newsmagazine is one of 12 schools honored in California among 41 schools nationwide and one from the United Kingdom. The announcement, made in late September, highlights what NSPA President Laura Widmer described as “the best of the best.”

NSPA judges evaluated the four Crimson issues published during the 2023-2024 school year, reviewing the quality of reporting, photography, design, and editorial leadership. Editors-in-chief Kalani Gaviola, Elise Mathers, and Serenity Wulfing led the Crimson staff, which consists of 23 students.

In November, 20 students and chaperones will attend the National High School Journalism Convention in Philadelphia to receive their Pacemaker Finalist award and participate in various contests and learning sessions.

This marks the fourth time in the past decade that Crimson Newsmagazine has been named a Pacemaker Finalist. The magazine also won the award in 2023. Since 2009, Crimson has placed 18 times in print and online National Best of Shows. More than 65 students have won individual awards at the national level, and the program has received eight consecutive NSPA All-American rankings.

Crimson Newsmagazine is advised by teacher Jeff Mount, who has led the program through Paso Robles High School’s Careers in Technical Education Department since 2000. He can be reached at jmount@pasoschools.org.
