Cuesta College’s graduating class of 2015 will graduate 907 students and award 1,141 degrees at the 50th annual commencement ceremony on Friday, May 22. This is a 25 percent increase in students graduated and a nearly 27 percent increase in degrees awarded from 2014.

“We are thrilled with the increases in our graduation and degree earning rates,” said Assistant Superintendent/Vice President of Academic Affairs Dr. Deb Wulff. “We are attributing much of this increase to the success of our transfer degrees; I believe the students understand how the transfer degrees can directly benefit their future education endeavors.”

A total of 259 transfer degrees are being awarded; an increase of nearly 60 percent over last year. Cuesta College offers a total of 22 transfer degrees, which is the second most of all California community colleges. Transfer degrees provide students with a clear pathway to the California State University degree major. Additionally, 685 associate of arts and 197 associate of sciences degrees will be awarded this year.

The college is also seeing a 28 percent increase in the amount of 2015 graduates coming from local high schools over last year – nearly 44 percent, totaling 398 individuals.

The class of 2015 will also include the very first Promise Scholarship graduates. One student will be awarded a degree on May 22; 11 others will receive certificates of completion. The 12 students are a part of the very first group of Promise Scholarship recipients who received fee-free fall 2014 and spring 2015 semesters.

International students from South Korea, France, Canada, Hong Kong, India, Netherlands, Portugal and Russia, and seven states, including Washington, Oregon, Colorado, Arizona, Minnesota, Utah, and Wyoming are among the graduating class.

The graduates range in age from 18 to 63, and degrees will be bestowed upon 366 males and 532 females. Of the graduates, 244 earned honors or high honors by achieving a grade point average of 3.5 or higher, including 15 that earned a perfect 4.0. The graduates must have completed degree requirements in fall 2014, spring 2015 and summer 2015 semesters.

Cuesta’s 50th general commencement ceremony will start at 3 p.m. on May 22 at the Cuesta College gymnasium on the San Luis Obispo Campus.
