Dietrich Martin von Dohlen, 77, passed away peacefully in his sleep at home on April 13, 2017, in Campbell, CA, after a year-long battle with cancer.

Dietrich was born on February 18, 1940 in Modesto, CA to Louis and Ruth (Janssen) von Dohlen. He grew up in Ceres, CA, and graduated from Ceres High School in 1958. While in high school he started working summers for the CA Department of Forestry. After high school he attended Cal Poly University in San Luis Obispo, during which time he met his future wife of 52 years Lanna (Jones), and continued to work for the Department of Forestry and also as a school bus driver. Dietrich served in the United States Coast Guard from 1962 to 1966, where he was trained as an electrician.

Dietrich later ran his own electrical contracting business, Von’s Service, and then became an electrician employed by the County of Santa Clara in 1974. In 1979 he became a Building Inspector for Santa Clara County, which he served for over 18 years. For the last 20 years in retirement, Dietrich and Lanna split their time between their home in Campbell, CA and their cattle ranch in Stonyford, CA.

Dietrich was a member and officer of several organizations, including the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers; Past President and Board Member of the Central California Council of American Youth Hostels; Cubmaster of Cub Scout Pack 311 and Scoutmaster of Boy Scout Troop 371 in Campbell, CA; Unit Commissioner in Pioneer District, Santa Clara County Council Boy Scouts of America; Little League Coach for Campbell Little League; member of the Building Board of Appeals for the City of Campbell, CA; and Auxiliary Member of the Bear Valley / Indian Valley Volunteer Fire Department in Stonyford, CA.

Dietrich is survived by his wife Lanna; his son Steven [wife: Tricia] and grandchildren Tom, Alex and Bailey of Paso Robles, CA; his son Jerry of McKinleyville, CA; his brother Jim [wife: Barbara] of Hughson, CA; his sister Judy [husband: Frank] of Stonyford, CA; and seven nieces and nephews and their families.

Dietrich was preceded in death by his parents Louis and Ruth.

A funeral service will be held at Stonyford Cemetery at 11 a.m., Saturday, April 22, 2017, with a reception to follow at the Stonyford Grange Hall.
